Saturday at Hangtown

May 21, 2005

By Allison Kennedy

Dusty Klatt leaves the line during his 125 qualifier.Klatt finished 13th in his qualifier after rounding the first corner near the back of the pack.

JSR leads Damon Huffman in their 250 qualifier. Travis Preston had a huge lead but Roy rode strong in second with Huffman gaining on him until the last lap. With only half a lap remaining, Roy dropped the front end and went over the bars. Huffman went on to finish second while Roy remounted and finished ninth to qualify for Sunday's program.

The Hangtown talent pool is deep. Klatt looked more comfortable as the afternoon wore on, especially once the gate dropped and the focus was on racing.

Donnie McGourty struggled with setup issues during practice. He finished 24th in his qualifier but went on to win the consolation race and earn a spot in Sunday's program.

Despite the team's best efforts to get Mitch Cooke on the entry list, he'll have to wait for Mission to show what he can do as part of the Blackfoot team.

Bubba posted the second fastest lap time in practice, just behind Chad Reed and ahead of Ricky Carmichael. The three rode close during some of practice, giving fans a glimpse of the show Sunday should bring.

Carmichael posted the third fastest lap time in practice. It was good to see the Canadian flags still proudly on his jersey.

There were more Canadian women racing Saturday than Canadian men. Here Calgary's Jessica Foster leads Jolene Van Vugt during the second WMA moto. Malerie Prochnavy and Camille Baker also raced the WMA National. Defending WMA champ Jessica Patterson won the overall with 1-1 motos.

See you at the races.
