CMX Port Perry Motocross

May 10, 2005

Brett Dailey

Eventual winner, Tim Tim Zufelt (564) holeshots the GP Intermediate class followed by Dave Arnold (439), Tyler Winer (777), Julian Lapointe (278), Peter Ledingham (31), Craig Asselstine (738), Martin Harant (707) and Matt Hansford (383).

A race in Port Perry, less than an hour from my house? Yes it was Mother's Day but even my wife understands that I get an itch for racing when the track is almost in my backyard. Tom Beaton and the CMX crew took advantage of a break in the CMRC schedule and hosted a two-day event in Port Perry on Mother's Day. It was a good gamble as the race attracted lots of racers and the weather couldn't have been better.

The track is located just outside the town of Port Perry and features a nice layout with a few big jumps. In the morning, the dirt had a nice loamy consistency in the front but it was pretty wet in the back portion of the track. As the day progressed, the back section dried out and stayed loamy but the front got dusty pretty quickly. All in all, the track looked fun and the racers were enjoying the racing and the weather.

Aside from the riders below, the standouts were: Rachael Piercey and Nathan Cryer swapped moto wins in the 50cc 4-6 class; Ricky Beaton swept the 50cc 7-8 class; John Penney went 1-1 in the 65cc B class while Bobby Byers did the same in the 65cc A class and the 85cc 8-12 class; Dan Pilon won the 85cc 13-16 class and the GP mini class; Katerina Mildner went 1-1 in the Ladies class; John Peterbaugh won the 125 B class and the Novice GP class; In the Novice A class, Brandyn Nagel, Marcus Burke and Jay Singler all won motos; Lee Moffatt won the +30B class followed by Toby Stoll while Wayne Major won the +30A class; and finally, Pat Beasley swept the +40 class.

Holeshot Racing's Dave Belford raced the 250 pro class and the +30A class.

The junior classes featured full gates. Motocross is looking good!

The fastest Intermediate of the day, Brad Adams finished fourth in the Pro Am class, third in the Youth class and won the 125 Intermediate class.

Remember Derek Arnold from the 2001 Canadian Nationals? He was motoleague.com's pick of the week for about four weeks straight with a couple of top 10 finishes in 125 East. The 26-year-old motorcycle mechanic is getting into shape and hopes to line up for the Gopher Dunes national in July.

Craig Asselstine finished 8-9 in the 250 Intermediate class and 4-5 in GP Intermediate on his new Suzuki RM-Z450.

Marcus Burke won the first 125 Novice A moto. His 1-3 was good for second overall.

South Africa's Richard Chater was the hero of the day. He swept the 250 Pro, ProAm and Youth classes.

Probably the best rut rider on the track, Cory Gerrits was second overall in 125 Intermediate and fifth overall in ProAm and fourth overall in Youth. How many motos do these guys ride?

Oops. Even the best rut riders get stuck in wheel-deep ruts.

Martin Harant was second overall in 250 Intermediate and GP Intermediate but he almost got Zufelt in one of the motos.

There were quite a few two-strokes on the line—even in the 125 class.

Sean Martland (361) holeshots the 250 Pro class.

Tim Zufelt swept the 250 Intermediate and GP Intermediate classes and went 6-6 in ProAm.

Big crash at the start of the 85cc race.

Paul Kingsley handles the ref duties. Looking for the poster child for motocross-induced knee injuries? Look no further than Mr. Kingsley.
