When riders
think of heading south to train, they’re under
the illusion that Florida is the place to be. That’s
partly true, the sunshine state does feature a host
of great motocross tracks, but you don’t have
to travel 25 hours for quality riding. This past March,
Mike Ackerman, Rick Lacombe and myself, headed south
for some saddle time before the Canadian season kicked
off. Our plan was to drive to County Line MX Park (located
just 30 minutes north of Panama City), but we couldn’t
wait the 25-hour drive before unloading the dirt scoots.
To break up the drive and fulfill our riding withdrawal,
we stopped at the Laurel Mountain MX track in Madisonville,
Tennessee. It turned out to be a perfect decision. The
track owner, Kenny, allowed us to sleep in the main
building which was outfitted with showers, six bunk
beds, a television and a fridge—all for the low,
low price of $15 U.S. a night! Kenny treats Canadians
with great hospitality and awards them privileges not
usually given to local riders. The track features continuous
elevation changes, a wide variety of safe, challenging
jumps, dirt similar to Walton and its preparation rivals
most national tracks.
