The Lakeshore Dirt Riders Motorcycle Club has putting on motocross and harescramble events since the 1970s. The Lakeshore club has always been relatively small and family oriented, but in the last few years it has exploded, and as a result, there are now 19 classes! On September 11, the club held its annual charity race at the Muttco Mountain track in Centreton, Ontario, where all proceeds from the event went to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. As an addition to glam up the race, trophies are handed out to the top riders, participation medals are given to all mini-bike racers and an auction and Dash and for Cash race were included in this year’s event, as well. We spoke with LRDMC President, Rick Jones, to find out how much money the club raised for Sick Kids.

RXC: Rick, how did the charity race at Muttco Mountain go?

Rick Jones: Great, we raised over $11, 000! So I think it went awesome!

Wow, that must be some sort of record for LDRMC?

I believe so. I think the highest we did before was $6,000, so… I’m not sure exactly how many riders were there, but I was told there were over 500 entries.

And that all goes to Sick Kids in Toronto?

Right to the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

How did the auction with the jerseys go?

The highest bid jersey was Sarah Whitmore’s, surprisingly. It went for $625. I’m not sure how much the rest went for, I think the next highest was one of Dusty Klatt’s jerseys, it went for a little over $100. Most of them were $50 to $100 for the rest of them.

Now for people not familiar with LDRMC, what was different with the charity race from a normal race?

Yeah we usually just do trophies for the series, but for the charity race—it’s the only we race we do trophies for, and all of the money for that is donated by sponsors, members or businesses who donate $50 and with that we were able to cover the full cost of the trophies.

New for this year was the Dash for Cash. How did that turn out?

That was won by Ryan Gauld, he got $300. Second place was Derek Arnold, he won $125 and third was Joseph Rose, who won $75. Kyle Ferguson got fourth and won a set a gear but wasn’t allowed to wear it because of a contract he has signed or something.

LDRMC has always been a small club, but in the last few years it has really grown. Why do you think that is?

It’s the family oriented thing, like a lot of our memberships are still families, right. The tracks are not real difficult, but there is a challenge to most riding levels. But they’re all safe, people don’t tend to get hurt too badly. It’s less intimidating and it’s a good stepping stone for people who plan to race CMRC.

Thanks Rick.

No problem. Also we’d like to thank everyone who helped to put the event on, and all the riders who showed up to race. Thanks a lot.
