Ste Julie Qualifying Update

KTM Canada's Matt Barnes grabs the early lead in MX2 qualifying.

The sun was shining, the track was well-prepped and the qualifying action was intense. The day went well for everyone...except maybe Kyle Chisholm. Chisholm arrived at Ste Julie with an 8 point lead over Blackfoot Honda's Mitchell Cooke. KTM Canada's Michael Willard was just one point behind Cooke. If the MX2 qualifiers were any indication, Sunday's title decision is going to be intense. In the first MX2 qualifier, Willard grabbed the holeshot and checked out leaving Machine Racing teammates Chuck Mesley and Kyle Keast to battle for the second and third spots. Chisholm was running inside the top five but a first lap crash sent him to the back of the pack, not exactly where he wanted to be with fellow championship contender Willard earning the maximum points. While Keast was gradually catching Mesley, Mesley held on for second. With the CMRC's new points for qualifying system, the win earned Willard a much-needed five point reward. In the second MX2 qualifier, KTM's Matt Barnes got a good start but Richmond Kawasaki's Ryan Lockhart moved into the lead early.  To make things worse for Chisholm, Blackfoot's Mitch Cooke held off his new teammate Chad Charbonneau and was catching Lockhart at the finish. Cooke finished second and earned four points, leaving him tied with Willard for second in the points standings. Chisholm held onto his points lead, after a fourth place finish in his qualifier, but now only has a five-point margin over both Willard and Cooke. It promises to be a very interesting race for the title with no room for error. In the MX1 class, Craig Decker got a good start in the first qualifier and walked away with an easy win. JSR crashed while running in the top five and had to charge through the pack to finish 12th. In the second MX1 qualifier, Marco Dube got the holeshot and had one of his best rides of the year, holding off OTSFF Suzuki's Keith Johnson for the win.

Marco Dube won the second MX1 qualifier.

Craig Decker won the first MX1 qualifier with a huge lead.

Michael Willard picked up some much-needed points with a win in MX2.

Kawasaki's Kyle Chisholm lost a little ground in the MX2 points race.

Mitch Cooke and Michael Willard are now tied for second place
