Morgan Racing Yamaha’s entire team finished inside the top ten at Round 6 of the CMRC Canadian Nationals in Joliette, Quebec. The track was hard packed and dusty, a stark contrast to the conditions at the prior round in Gopher Dunes. With only three rounds remaining in the national series, Morgan Racing’s results continue to strengthen and the team is optimistic heading into the final stages.
Californian Craig Decker topped the results for the team at Joliette with a solid 3-3 for third overall. Decker used strong starts and consistent riding on his Yamaha YZ450F to claim his second podium of the season. Decker moved back into third place in the MX1 overall standings, only two points away from Damon Huffman who sits in second overall. “I wish I could have got Damon in that last moto as it would have given me the overall,” said Decker. “I nailed my starts today. I holeshot the first one and in the second moto I was second or third. The YZ450 is good for me on the starts.”
Multi-time Canadian Champion, Blair Morgan continues to claw his way to the top of the leader board with consistent rides. Still recovering from his snowcross season ankle injury, Morgan must have cringed every time he approached the long, supercross-style whoop section in Joliette. Despite that, he soldiered on to respectable 5-9 motos for sixth overall. This weekend’s race in Moncton, NB is the site of Morgan’s impressive podium performance from 2004 so he will be confident going into Round 7.
Erick Vallejo put his supercross skills to the test in Joliette and was one of the fastest riders through the challenging whoop section. His skill set paid off as Vallejo went 6-7 for seventh overall just behind teammate Blair Morgan. He set lap times on a par with the leaders and this weekend’s jump filled Moncton track should suit Vallejo so look his YZ250 up front at Round 7.
Another highlight of the weekend was a tenth place overall for MX2 rider Johnny Montes. Rebounding from a disappointing weekend at Gopher Dunes, Montes also took advantage of some strong starts on his YZ250F to finish 11-8 on the day. He now heads into his hometown race at Riverglade MX Park in Moncton, NB with confidence in himself, his bike and the team.
“I just took a step back this week and kind of relaxed a little bit,” confirmed Montes who is already in the top 15 of the overall standings. “I put too much pressure on myself last weekend and I didn’t ride the way I’m able to. The [Joliette] track was really hard to pass on so I really worked on starts this week. I had problems in the whoops but I felt a little stronger at times and got a rhythm through them. I’m confident going into Moncton … I know that track really well. The pace is fast and these guys are all really good riders so I just need to get some good starts and I know I can run the pace now. I got top 10 overall this weekend so I would like to look forward to a top five. The team is behind me and my mechanic, Mike Smith, is working hard. Morgan Racing has given me a huge opportunity so I really want to step it up and keep my ride for next year.”
