On Sunday, Team Honda Canada Blackfoot Fox Racing's Jean Sebastien Roy and Damon Huffman claimed 1st and 2nd overall respectively in the MX1 title hunt at Round 5 of the series in Courtland, ON. Defending MX1 Champion Roy started the eastern leg of the CMRC Canadian Motocross Championships where he had left off three weeks earlier in Regina, SK by handily winning both motos. JSR once again demonstrated his unrivaled supremacy in the premiere class by finishing both motos with +25 second margins. He was never even remotely challenged for the lead as he tacked on another perfect 55 points to his growing lead in the series. Huffy, who admittedly hasn't been getting much sleep lately now that he's a brand new dad, snared runner-up thanks to hard-fought for 4-2 moto results. Teammate Dusty Klatt, fresh off winning the MX2 West Championship, carded noteworthy 5-5 motos toclaim 5th overall on the extremely demanding Gopher Dunes track.
While JSR blasted out of the gate in Moto 1 to take the field in tow through turn one with Huffman by his side, Roy quickly took up his customary place at the front of the pack. He started to distance himself from the field lap after lap all the way to the checkered. Behind JSR, Huffy had to contend with an unrelenting Keith Johnson and Simon Homans to eventually take 4th at the finish line.
Moto 2 saw Johnson grab the holeshot ahead of JSR but within minutes the Quebec native was in the driver's seat. Once again Roy set out to stick a huge gap on his immediate pursuers, which for most of the moto consisted of Huffman in 2nd, Gavin Gracyk in 3rd, Blair Morgan in 4th and Klatt in 5th. On the strength of 2-6 motos,Johnson joined the Blackfoot Racing duo of JSR and Huffman on the podium in 3rd overall.
"The starts were the main thing today and in both motos I was up there. But it's all in the bikes, really. I'm just the guy who turns the throttle," said Roy. "I just try to maintain my lap time every lap and stay focused. This was the toughest race of the season so far because the track just got rougher and rougher after every lap. And the heat, humidity and on and off again rain were hard to handle physically as well as mentally."
The opening round of the MX2 East Championship proved less successful for Team Honda Canada Blackfoot Fox Racing. On a weekend where the start was everything, teammates Donnie McGourty and Mitch Cooke did not get the results they were looking for in both motos. They contained the damage in Moto 1 by charging through the pack to claim 5th and 8th at the finish line respectively. In the second moto, defending champion McGourty, who suffered a wrist injury during practice on Saturday, pulled off the track shortly after the start of the moto, unable to continue because he had too much trouble holding on to his handlebar due to the intense pain. Cooke rallied from a mid pack start to take possession of 7th by the time the checkered was waved. He carded 7th overall for the day.
"All in all were happy with our first round in the east. We obviously would have liked to have cleared the podium off in MX1 but we were unable to do that this weekend", said team coordinator Dean Thompson. "The MX2 definitely could have been better but despite the results we don't consider ourselves out of the title hunt. With three rounds left to go anything is possible as we saw out here today. Mitch gave it everything he had and showed that he has the speed to be an MX2 champion. He did exactly as we discussed before the race, which was finish both motos solid and we are proud of his efforts this weekend. It was unfortunate that Donnie injured his wrist this weekend and we are hoping that it is nothing serious and he can be healthy and ride at the speed we know is capable of running."
