Despite unusually high amounts of precipitation in the weeks leading up to the event, the volunteers at Grunthal Centennial Raceway with the help of race day sponsor FXR MX Racing once again managed to provide a top rate track and facility to the members of the MMA. With only one small track alteration as well as the need to close a small section of the pit area due to flooding we were ready for the gate to drop! Due to several rainouts, what was originally scheduled as round seven of the Motovan Spring Championship was the fourth opportunity for racers to earn points towards the title.

Coming off his thirteenth place finish in Moto 1 of the MX2 class at the Regina National, Mike Harms (2) chases down Adam Knutt (6) in the first 125 Pro moto. Harms charged his Winnipeg Sport & Leisure/FXR MX backed CRF250R to 2-1 finishes taking the overall.  Gregscustom.com rider Nick Dunn grabbed second going 1-4 after getting into a first turn pileup in the second moto.  Rounding out the podium was the Westside Honda/FXR MX machine of James Simner. The win vaulted Harms past Simner into second place in the series while Dunn retains a 21 point advantage.

Entering the day with a 34 point lead in the 80cc (12-16) class, Colton Ryz saw his nearest rival Nolan Allard take the first moto. Ryz rebounded in moto two with the win and took the overall with his 2-1 finishes.  Allard went down in moto two and finished eleventh; his 1-11 was good enough for fourth overall. Amy Houde went 3-2 for second overall; jumping into the top five in points in the process.

Headingley Sport Shop/FXR MX Racing backed Matt Hamm is adjusting to life as a new father while still racing the 250 Pro and Youth classes.  Hamm took the final podium step in the Youth class while missing by two with a fifth overall in the 250 pro class.

After a horrific crash that ended his 2004 season, it’s nice to see Leonard Sawatsky back on the line in the Junior classes in 2005.

In Little Ladies action, Rayna Mc Kellar went 1-1 on the day and in the process wrestled the points lead away from Ashley Friesen.

Ryan Rondeau had a season high fourth overall with 6-5 moto scores in the 250 Intermediate class.  It was enough for Rondeau to hold onto his third place standing in the points while Darcy Goerzen posted a 4-2 day for third overall and jumped from fourth to second.

Jonathon Chapman (500) leads Peter Tereck (326) and Curtis Dowling (61) in early going in the GP Junior class.  Chapman took the overall going 1-1 and in the process stretched his lead in the class to 61 points after second place rider Aaron Pfrimmer opted not to run this class.  Tereck took the third spot on the podium while Logan Zimmerman went 3-2 and grabbed second spot.

Tim Lavoie (66) leads Dustin Hargreaves (22), Grant Hlady (505) and the rest of the 250 Intermediate class into the first rhythm section.  Lavoie survived a high-speed loop out in the whoops in moto 1 to go 1-1 on the day and now enjoys a 47 point cushion.

With a win in the second moto of the 50cc (7-8) class Dallas Laird interrupted the perfect season of class leader Logan Swanson.  Laird went 9-1 on the day for second overall.  Swanson finished 1-4 and took the overall. Hey FXR, get this kid some gloves!

1999 Manitoba 250 Pro class champion Kim Houde came into the day tied with Dwayne Paterson for the lead in the Vet Master class.  Houde piloted his Winnipeg Sport & Leisure/ FXR MX Racing Honda to a 1-1 day and grabbed a 29 point lead.  Renold Sawatsky made a big move grabbing second place in the points with his 2-2 day to Paterson’s 3-DNS.

Josh Shiskoski looked to be back on form after a nasty crash on the large downhill jump at Morden.  Shiskoski is in his first season in the 125 Pro class.

Hunter Teichrib fresh off his victory in the 50cc (4-6) class at the Raymond Amateur National continued his perfect season in Manitoba.  Ryan Kokorudz used the confidence gained from his eighth place finish at Raymond to grab the second step on the podium at Grunthal.

At times, second year pro Josh Penner and his gregscustom.com/FXR MX Racing backed Suzuki’s look like the fastest ride out there in the pro classes.   Penner grabbed the second step on the podium in the 250 class and just missed the podium with a fourth place finish in the 125 class.

In 125 Junior action, Brad Wiebe turned 5-3 finishes into a second place finish overall behind class leader Jonathan Chapman.  Chapman had his eleven point lead reduced by three after Aaron Pfrimmer grabbed the first moto victory.  Pfrimmer had problems in moto two and finished out of the points allowing Chapman to finish the day with a 33 point lead.

Richmond Morin had a big day in the 65cc A class going 1-2 for the overall.  Morin also made a big move in the season standings jumping from fourth into second in a very tight points race. Currently four points separates second from fourth, while Rio Stoesz enjoys a 24 point lead.

In 250 Pro action, gregscustom.com riders swept the podium with Nick Dunn putting his KTM 250SX on top of the podium with convincing wins in both moto’s.  Josh Penner grabbed second overall while David Ledarney took third on his RM250.

Armand Valloton used consistent 2-2 finishes in the 250 Junior class to take the overall just edging out the 4-1 scores of Jesse Downey.  Both Valloton and Downey are now tied for the series points lead with 143 points.

David Ledarney continued his run at the top of the Youth class.  Ledarney put his gregscustom.com Suzuki RM250 on top of the podium in both moto’s.

James Simner grabbed the second step on the podium in the Youth class.

Aaron Pfrimmer (32) Grabs a Youth B class holeshot, right on his heels is Mylen Parisian (721).  Pfrimmer went 1-1 on the day while Parisian followed with a 2-2, rounding out the podium was Rick Fehr with a matching 3-3 finish.

Returning from his victory at the Raymond Amateur National in the 80cc (7-11) class, Ryan Millar picked up right where he left off taking both moto’s in the 80cc (7-11) and Supermini classes.  Millar also went 6-DNS in the 125 Junior class on his KTM 105SX.

Darcy Goerzen grabbed second overall in the 125 Intermediate class with a 4-2 day and in the process moved up to fourth in the points chase.  Tim Lavoie won the class going 1-1 and stretched his points lead to 16 over Eddie Anderson.

FXR’s own Aaron Wiebe was pulling triple duty at Grunthal; racing the 250 Pro and 25+ classes while doing some announcing in the tower during raceday.  How did the day go?  Aaron is an excellent announcer.

Charity Schmidt took her second overall of the season in the Ladies class riding consistently and taking advantage of mistakes by Amy Houde and Desirae Shiskoski to post 1-3 finishes for the day.  Shiskoski took second overall with a 2-2 day while Houde won the second moto after a DNF in moto one.

In what was once again the biggest class of the day, Keith Kanski took the victory in the 125 Beginner class after a pair of qualifiers and an LCQ.  Devon Ward took advantage of a pointless day by class leader Jason Bergen to pull within two points in the series.

Renold Sawatsky (10) and his Morden Motorsports Honda lead Scott Unrau (77) during the multi gate 40+/25+/250 Beginner moto.  Sawatsky took the overall in 40+ going 2-1 on the day and besting the 1-3 of Kim Houde who hit the ground while leading moto two.  Unrau took the 25+ class after Ian Ginter and Russ Beaudette were both penalized 5 spots for jumping on a yellow flag.  Michael Johnson was the victor in the 250 Beginner class.

Not only did FXR owner Milt Reimer (202) sign on as the raceday sponsor he also signed up for the 250 Intermediate class.  Here he leads Luke MacFadden (94) during moto one.

That’s all for now. Until next time, try not to get stuck in a rut!
