MX2 - Doug DeHaan 2nd overall on his YZ250F.
Gopher Dunes was nasty! Extremely hot, humid, whooped out and gnarly. A torture test in a sand box. Local boy, London Ontario's Doug DeHaan showed that his Enzo suspended, Pirelli shod, YZ250F was as capable and reliable as he was to take on the challenge of the "Dunes" for both 30 minute motos. There was a high attrition rate as the track conditions took its toll on the competition, but Doug hammered through. After suffering from a bad gate pick, resulting in a mid-pack start, # 11 settled in and went to work. Ducking roost the entire way, DeHaan managed to roll past the checkers in 4th. With a much better gate pick for the second moto, Doug yanked the holeshot and led for 3 laps, he found his pace and cruised into the finish in third, being rewarded with 2nd overall for the day. Doug's commitment to training and his high level of fitness really paid off in the strength zapping conditions. This is a great start for DeHaan's MX2 East championship hopes.
The new member of the team, Shane Bess (MX1) had a great start to this eastern half of the series, adapting to his YZ250 quickly. He rounded the first turn of the first moto well in the pack, took some time to figure out his lines and then started his charge to the front. After 20 minutes he was in the into the top ten but wasn't done yet. He was still gaining on the riders ahead, made some good moves, taking the # 102 YZ across the line in 7th. Really an awesome performance, considering how little time he had on the bike and was still adapting. Second moto was a repeat of the first till the 26 minute mark. Shane had a good pace going, pounding through the ever deepening sand whoops. While battling for seventh, Bess unfortunately caught a whoop wrong and the G force wrenched his neck. At his pace, it was looking like he could go all the way to sixth but the injury halted his charge. Shane finished 12th overall with a 7 - 21 score. He will be back at Joliette looking for top five results.
Brad Hagseth made the effort to compete, but his previous rib injury prevented him from being as prepared as he needed to be for the conditions. Brad started both motos but after crashing each time out he was forced to retire. Hagseth will be back to 100% for the next round in Joliette.
