The Castrol Raceway track in Edmonton, Alberta This was photo would be better had I shot it on Sunday when it
was filled with fans, but I was too busy making turkey and cheese
sandwiches for "The Mez." The dirt in Edmonton felt great beneath the tires, but not so nice on the face, chest or arms.
Castrol Raceway isn’t your typical stop on the Canadian tour. It’s an
established racing facility with a drag strip and oval track,
grandstands, a paved vending area, well-groomed, grassy pits—and it has
flush toilets! National Track Tour Presented by Sturgessonline.com
Castrol Raceway is the new kid (track) on the block of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals. It was somewhat surprising when the CMRC announced that Edmonton would replace Calgary; no one had heard of the place before, it was on flat ground and the track was a question mark. Fortunately, the new kid is surrounded by some passionate and hard working enthusiasts and turned out to be one of the best Canadian nationals. Plus, he had some pretty kick ass shoes.
Elevation changes definitely improve a motocross track for riders and
spectators alike, but as proven by standout national tracks like Sand
Del Lee and Gopher Dunes, you can get away without them if the work is
put in. There’s no questioning the work put into the Castrol track.
They brought in load after load of dark, loamy soil, Chick and Matt Lee
created a fun, fast and entertaining track layout, and the Alberta Old
Timers and tons of volunteers ensured the new kid would have no trouble
fitting in. The final product received rave reviews from fans and
riders alike and from all accounts, we’re going back in `09.
