--press release--
Team Honda Canada Blackfoot Fox Racings Dusty Klatt and Jean Sebastien Roy scored their third consecutive victory in the MX2 West and MX1 class respectively at Round 3 of the CMRC Canadian Motocross Championships in Calgary on Sunday, June 19, 2005. In an event that was dogged with the threat of cancellation, due to a two-week period of record rainfall in the Calgary area, JSR snared the overall with a second clean sweep of the season.
Dusty Klatt again secured his third straight overall after laying down clean sweeps at the first two rounds of the MX2 West Championship his overall victory at Wild Rose MX Park, based on 3-2 results, saw him jump ahead to a comfortable lead in the points chase. The Campbell River, BC native currently tallies 147 points, 32 more than second place Jeff Northrop and 36 more than third place Kyle Beaton. Klatt and Roys teammate Damon Huffman made it a stellar day for Blackfoot by chalking up his first podium of the season, carding third overall in the MX1 title hunt.
Although CMRC officials had to cancel practice and qualifiers on Saturday because of rain and an un-navigable muddy track, they were able to give the go ahead for Sundays MX1 and MX2 Championship races. Under sunny skies in the first MX2 moto, Klatt got a mid-pack start, on what was still a relatively muddy race track. He gradually knifed his way through the pack to connect with Jeff Northrop and Teddy Maier. The Richmond Racing Kawasaki Canada duo was chasing their teammate Ryan Villopoto, who had led the race from the get-to. Klatt, in a brazen maneuver and thinking championship wining thoughts followed in Maiers tracks when he stuck a pass on Northrop, which gave Klatt a third place finish at the checkered.
KTM Canadas Jimmy Nelson grabbed the second moto holeshot, but he was quickly displaced from the lead by Maier. Maier, in turn, saw his lead confiscated by Suzukis Jake Weimer. Meanwhile, Klatt again thinking about winning the overall and valuable MX-2 Championship points soldiered his way from a mid-pack start to the front. This time, he crossed the finish line in second place, which thanks to a DNF by Villopoto and a spectacular get-off by Maier, allowed Klatt to snare the overall for the day. Weimer, with 5-1 motos, and Northrop, with 4-3, joined Klatt on the podium in second and third place respectively.
I didnt get the starts I wanted but all in all it was a good weekend for me, said Klatt. I decided not to take any chances and race for points. That I got the overall was great, but now Ive got a fairly decent points lead. Thats definitely going to help out next weekend at the final round of the MX-2 series when I hope to clinch my second straight Championship for Honda Canada, Blackfoot, Fox and all our team sponsors.
JSR, who got a fifth place start in the first MX1 moto, rode a conservative race in a bid to connect with front runners Gavin Gracyk and Craig Decker. It took the defending champion some time to wrestle the lead from Team Suzuki OTSFFs Gracyk. Yamaha Canadas Decker was unable to threaten Gracyk and he had to settle for third at the checkered flag. Huffman, intent on making good his promise to podium in Calgary, charged from an eighth place start to finish fourth behind Decker.
Moto two saw Yamahas Blair Morgan grab the holeshot, but the multi-time champions lead was short-lived. Two laps later he was passed by Gracyk. JSR followed suit and he hounded Gracyk for only a few laps before taking over the lead. Once in control, the Quebecer cruised unchallenged to his third win of the season by a considerable margin over Gracyk.
It was a little tougher out there today than the first two rounds because everyone is trying to step it up however my mechanic Andrew and our team have done their homework and our equipment is second to none. I got pretty good starts and that allowed me to take it easy for a while to work my way into the lead. The track was really nasty, really rough so I didnt want to push it too hard and risk crashing, said Roy. In the end it is all about the Championship.
Gracyk managed to hold onto second place, which combined with his second slot in the first moto, saw him chalk up second overall. Huffman, who again got a mid-pack start, was not to be denied, however. He clawed and charged his way into third place, which combined with his fourth from the first moto, saw him card third overall on the podium.
Klatt, who had not raced the first MX1 moto in order to conserve energy for the final MX2 West moto of the day, proved once again that he is a growing force to be reckoned with in the premier MX1 class. As in both MX2 motos, Klatt was unable to grab a decent start in the second MX1 moto, but by the time the checkered flew he had worked his way from 15th place to fourth.
We couldnt have asked for anything more today, here at our hometown race. It was a great day for us with Dusty, JSR and Damon on the podium, said Blackfoot Racing Team Coordinator, Dean Thompson. Once again our Honda/FMF/PR2 CRs and CRFs were well prepped by our technicians and the bikes proved absolutely reliable to get the job done.
Blackfoot racing and their entire roster of quality sponsors would like to thank the staff and volunteers of Wild Rose MX Park and Chick Schumilas of Tracks by Chick, for all the hard work they did to ensure Round 3 of the CMRC Canadian Motocross Championships was able to proceed as scheduled.
