Five Minutes with ... Nick Wey

Last year, Sand De Lee had the best race of the year, and between the big three and MDK/KTM's Nick Wey, 2008 should be better. If you live anywhere close to the track and you're not there you better be in jail or dead, and if you're in jail--break out!

There’s a new face coming up to battle with the guys this weekend in Sand Del Lee and it’s MDK/KTM’s Nick Wey. The Dewitt, Michigan native wants to stay sharp on an off weekend down south and called me to arrange the whole thing. So I decided to come up with him, and with the help of Brett Lee and Kevin Tyler (Thanks guys!) we pulled some sort of program together, and I’ll be driving up with Nick and some guy named Big Nasty to the CMRC National. I managed to get the attention of Nick for 4 minutes and 47 seconds for this interview. That alone should get me a gold medal at next year's X-Games.

RXC: What made you decide to race this weekend at Sand Del Lee? Because it really wasn’t me ... you called me about racing.
Nick Wey: Well, it’s not too far from my home and I’m just sitting around on the off weekend so why not? I think this track is a little like Millville and Southwick so that will help me when the series picks back up down here. I really want to catch Cody Cooper in points and maybe this will help me. It will be good practice and let’s face it, you really want to go also and it should be a fun trip. When I tried to back out last week, I thought you were going to cry.

Sorry about that. Yes I do think that it will be very fun, like old times. You’re bringing your practice bike?
Yeah, just going to pick-up truck and trailer it. I’m bringing my practice bike and also my practice bike mechanic, Big Nasty. He’ll be there with bells on.

What do you think of the track? Where have you seen it before?
I think I’ve seen it on Speed before. I think there was a good battle with JSR, Carpenter and some other dudes. I’m not sure if that was the same track but I think so. I did Youtube it and saw Gauldy ripping a lap off for the fans. It looks pretty sweet, sandy, and it looks similar to some tracks down here that I ride on. I also like riding in the sand. Look out Canada!

The last time you rode in Canada outdoors was Walton right?
Yep, that was a long time ago so it really means nothing that you brought that up. [Laughs] No, but seriously, all my friends in California say I’m from “South Canada” anyways, so why not go and join the series?

The last time Wey raced motocross in Canada it was his first ever pro race!

What do you know about the series and riders up in Canada?
Uh, my suspension guy, Rookie, his brother runs a team up there. JSR races up there, I’m hoping, because I have a lot of respect for him, Blair Morgan races up there. I’m hoping, because he’s cool. Other than that I know Jeff Northrop races for KTM up there and Randy Valade was the 2003 East Coast 125 champ, that’s the extent of my knowledge of Canadian motocross. Nah, I’m just kidding I know a lot more about the series than that. I know Facciotti has been winning, Klatt has been doing well and my friend Josh Woods has been telling me about this kid named Medaglia and how he’s been good.

What are your expectations for the weekend?
Just to have fun. The track looks sick and we’ll see what happens. Obviously we’re bringing the practice bike and a truck and trailer so I’m not 100 percent ready to do battle but I feel like I will be competitive. I look forward to mixing it up with those guys. I don’t want to get into their championship battle and screw it up for them. I’m just trying to be ready for these last three AMA races and finish it out strong.

That’s too bad I’m not wrenching for you like back in the day, huh?
I’ve got a guy and he’s on it. Besides, you’re out of practice these days, too much typing and selling Adjustable Leak Jets for you. My guy will be on it, we’ll need you though. You’re part of team two-seven, maybe the manager--you can even talk down to the mechanic if it makes you feel better.
