Facciotti shows no mercy in MX1 - Harvey stomps competition in MX2
Under hot sunny skies, Team Toyota Yamaha Blackfoot Fox Racing's Colton Facciotti and Aron Harvey took no prisoners at Round 6 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals at the brand new Castrol Racing facility in Edmonton, BC on Sunday. Facciotti, who displaced Team Suzuki Rockstar Energy OTSFF's Tyler Medaglia from the lead in the MX1 points standings, booked his fourth clean sweep of the season. Harvey, who recorded his second consecutive clean sweep in MX2, clearly has set his sights on points leader Eric Nye, who nailed down 5th overall on the strength of 5-5 motos.
Canadian motocross icon Blair Morgan, who greeted the checkered in 5th place in moto one, pulled out all the stops in the second moto to claim 2nd spot, which saw him finish the day with 2nd overall, making it another banner weekend for Team Toyota Yamaha Blackfoot Fox Racing. Medaglia, who proved fastest out of the gate in both motos, carded 3rd overall on the strength of 4-3 motos. With his reign at the top of rankings over, he now trails Facciotti by 11 points. Monster Energy Cernics Kawasaki's Dusty Klatt, 3rd in the points chase, claimed 4th overall on the strength of 2-6 motos.
In the first MX1 moto, Medaglia snared the holeshot with Yamaha/Blackfoot's Jimmy Nelson, Factory Connection Yamaha's Simon Homans, Suzuki OTSFF's Mitch Cooke and KTM Royal Distributing Thor Riverside MX's Jeff Northrop chasing him into turn one. Medaglia, who has been unable to find his groove on the hard western tracks, quickly lost his lead to Northrop. The Californian's position at the head of the pack was nearly just as short-lived, when Facciotti stormed by him a few laps later.
Once in control, Facciotti stepped up the pace and took it home to the checkered flag. He was followed by Klatt, who had to work his way through the pack from a 15th place start, and Northrop. Meanwhile, Nelson found himself dropping out of the top-five mix with mechanical problems while Cooke, who ran in 4th for a while, crashed and dropped back to an 8th place finish.
An on fire Medaglia nailed the second moto holeshot, but once again he was unable to hold onto the lead. Facciotti, who clearly has his mind set on winning the MX1 Championship, installed himself into the lead early on in the race to basically check out and claim his second victory of the day. His teammate Morgan also stuck a pass on Medaglia to go on and run his own race in 2nd place. With 2nd overall on the day, Morgan recorded his best finish of the season to date.
In the first MX2 moto, Aron Harvey pegged the holeshot taking Clearbrook Yamaha's Kyle Beaton, Leading Edge Kawasaki's Nick Evennou, and Yamaha Rockstar OTSFF's Jeremy Medaglia with him. Beaton put in a number of assaults on Harvey's lead but a bobble saw him finish the moto in 8th place. Fourth place finisher Evennou's teammate Teddy Maier, also a top starter, finished 3rd behind Medaglia who occupied 2nd place for most of the moto.
In moto two, Beaton proved to fastest out of the gate but Harvey had every intention of taking over the lead to make it a double-moto win. Maier, looking for an overall podium finish as well, also stuck a pass on Beaton as did KTM Royal Distributing Thor Riverside MX's Mason Phillips, who finished 7th in moto one. Meanwhile, Medaglia managed to secure 3rd overall on the podium, thanks to a 6th place finish behind Eric Nye who settled for his second 5th place moto finish of the day.
In the Suzuki Women's Series, KTM's Jacqueline Ross further solidified her lead in the title hunt by adding another 50 points to her bounty, thanks to a clean sweep. She was followed onto the podium by Kawasaki's Heidi Cooke, who carded 2-2 motos, and Yamaha's Jolene Van Vugt, who clinched 3rd overall on the strength of 3-3 motos.
