No one really knew who Aron Harvey was when Team Toyota Yamaha/BlackfootDirect.com/Fox Racing picked him up for the MX2 class, but they certainly do now. The kid from Carson City, Nevada has improved each race and he put it all together last weekend in Nanaimo, BC for his first win of the series. We caught up with Harvey shortly after his podium celebration to see how he’s enjoying his first year in Canada.
RXC: Well, Aron Harvey, you’re finally on top of the podium!
Aron Harvey: Yeah, I got a good start in the first moto and I liked the track. It was something different and I enjoyed it. I was having fun too.
I had to laugh though when you made the comment that you didn’t think there would be as many flat tires in Nanaimo.
[Laughs] Yeah. I ride stuff that’s way rockier at home and I don’t get a flat. I mean, you could get a flat out there but it was nothing crazy, I didn’t think.
Did you fly right into Nanaimo or did you take the ferry over from the mainland?
I took the ferry over and it was really cool. I’ve never done that before and it was a cool experience. It’s really beautiful up here.
You had three weeks off before Nanaimo, what kept you busy?
I was just riding and working; I wanted to get up here. That’s what I do during the week—I work at it. I’m still working on a few things and I’m not near where I want to be. It’s an improvement.
So what do you have to work on?
I have to go faster [laughs]! That’s all there is to it.
Your team manager, Dean Thompson, was hanging out with Chuck Mesley and I on Saturday night and he said you’re too easy on the bike. He says your rear brake rotor looks brand new!
Yeah, I probably need to change that and be a little harder on my bike to go faster. I’ve always been really easy on my bikes. In the States, racing with my dad, it was only him and I and if my bike broke, I was done. I know what it is like to blow up a bike; I’ve done it everywhere and I’ve learned to be easier on it. But I need to start being more aggressive on the bike.
With five races under your belt now, what’s your take on the Blackfoot team? Who do hang out with or chat with the most?
We’re all really close; we’ve spent a lot of time together. Blair [Morgan] and I get along really good and I stayed at JSR’s house for a bit. Colton [Facciotti] and I are good friends and we try to help out each other and same with Jimmy [Nelson]. It’s an awesome experience. I never thought I would be under the same tent as Blair Morgan. I remember watching him racing snocross and I hadn’t even started racing yet. It’s cool!
Give a shout out to those helping you this year, Aron.
I want to say thanks to Team Toyota Yamaha/BlackfootDirect.com/Fox Racing, my mechanic, Ken, Dean Thompson, Joe Skidd, Andrew and all of the mechanics, Jason, the owner, my parents, and my grandpa.
Oh, I also wanted to ask if your parents have had a chance to come up to Canada yet.
Yeah, my dad and my grandpa came up to Gopher. They’ve always gone to the races with me and my grandpa has been a huge supporter. I couldn’t have got here without him and he’s put a lot of time and money into me. My mom stays home and works most of the time, but she’s behind me and loves to see me do well.
