Medaglia and Killough on the podium in Regina
Tyler Medaglia kept his MX1 Championship points lead intact with second overall at Moto Valley in Regina this past weekend on the strength of 2-5 motos. In the Suzuki Women’s National Series, Jocelyn Killough stepped up to the plate with 3-4 moto results to record third overall for the day. Thanks to her podium finish, Killough currently holds second place in the Women’s championship points standings.
While Medaglia came to Regina intent on carding his second win of the season, the Kemptville, ON native found himself racing under handicap instead, due to a twisted ankle and knee sustained during Sunday morning practice. RM-Z450 EFI mounted Medaglia soldiered on, however, to fiercely defend his second place position in the first moto. After rounding turn one in second place at the start of the moto, he had to contend with former champ Dusty Klatt, then California’s Jeff Northrop, who briefly swapped positions with him on lap 9, and finally with multi-time champion Blair Morgan in the closing laps.
“It really wasn’t where I wanted to be, but my leg was bothering me so I kept it down a touch,” said Medaglia after the first moto. “I wanted to be up with Colton [Facciotti] battling for first place, but it was all I could do to keep the other guys from grabbing my second place.”
In moto two, Medaglia was sixth out of the gate only to hit a rebound in the first corner, which left him in a catch-up position, and eventually saw him battle for a top five position. On the third lap, he took over fifth place where he would remain for the rest of the moto, keeping a hard charging Blair Morgan and Kyle Keast behind him.
“The track was really hard in the second moto, there weren’t too many lines and it was kind of a survival race. By half race everyone up front kind of stayed in the same spot they were in,” said Medaglia. “Once again my bike ran really well and, considering everything, I think I did okay keeping a solid lead in the points.”
Medaglia’s MX1 teammate, Mitch Cooke, cemented the top ten carding 10-10 motos for tenth overall.
In MX2 action, Jeremy Medaglia finished sixth overall on the strength of 12-5 motos, leaving Regina in a two-way tie for third place in the points standings. After a midpack start in moto one, Medaglia’s hand guard was crushed against his hand and brake lever by a flying rock, which caused him to go down and damage the brake lever. Remounting towards the back of the pack, and now without front brakes, an undaunted Medaglia got on the throttle of his RM-Z250 to steadfastly make his way to a twelfth place finish on the last lap.
In the second moto, Medaglia parlayed a 15th place start into fifth place by the midway mark, fending off pressure by Ryan Lockhart while setting his sights on Aron Harvey, who was in fourth place.
“The first moto was a bit of a disappointment, but you never know what’s going to happen in racing,” said Medaglia. “I had a bit more time and room in the second moto to deal with the guys I was catching up to so I got up to fifth.”
Jocelyn Killough, meanwhile, rode another outstanding race in the Suzuki Women’s National Series. Killough, who was brought in from Team Suzuki’s B team to replace an injured Missy Hackett, continued to deliver the goods logging her second podium of the season.
“The first moto I got a pretty good start and just ran at my own pace. The second moto was kind of tough. I was battling with Jess Foster who wouldn’t give an inch,” said Killough. “I finally passed her on the last lap, because I knew that was going to be the difference between third and fourth overall, and I really wanted that podium finish.”
