It’s hard to miss style and grace in motocross. While riding style is secondary to winning, it’s still a very important part of becoming successful in racing. Learning to be smooth, precise, and fluent on a motorcycle builds a strong base, and when a rider can combines that with speed and aggression, it’s a tough combination to beat.
Scott Cameron caught my eye last weekend at the MMRS riding school, thanks to his flashy, Monster Energy inspired KX85 and outfit, his stylish body position on the bike, and his jumping skills. “My dad used to race and I always watched it on TV,” says Cameron on his early interest in MX. “After my dad took me to my first supercross in Toronto, in 2000, I got my first bike. I like motocross just because it’s fun—and I like to jump!”
Cameron continues to watch supercross, and it’s not hard to guess who his favourite racer is. “I like [Ryan] Villopoto,” says Cameron. “I like his riding style and sometimes to try ride like he does.” That’s probably not a bad thing. I know of a certain soon-to-be two-time AMA Supercross champ who also mimicked a certain seven-time SX champ’s riding style….
But supercross is a long ways away for this Scarborough native. First, Cameron wants to achieve his modest amateur goals this summer. “I had a bad year at Walton last year and fell in every moto,” Cameron says. “This year, I want to win the big six-foot trophy at MMRS and finish top-10 at the Walton TransCan.”
