APRIL 29, 2008
Nearly 400 riders invaded Moto Park this past weekend for Round 3 of the Royal Distributing Spring Classic presented by Motovan.com.
15 year old Edge Kawasaki rider Kyle Stephens earned his first overall Pro Am win with 1-1 moto finishes. Stephens started out third in moto 1 behind Machine Racing Yamaha's Ryan Gauld (4-2), and Suzuki mounted Richard Charter (2-4). Gauld soon passed Charter and found himself under attack from Stephens: "I just tried to pressure Ryan into a mistake and it worked" smiled the shy Stephens.
In moto two, Stephens grabbed the holeshot with Gauld and Intermediate rider Brandon Cowie(3-3) in tow. The three darted around the choppy track. As the moto wore on the two front runners began to distance themselves from Cowie and the chasing pack. In the very late stages of the moto, Gauld began to pressure Stephens, but the young rider held on for his first overall Pro Am win.
Other notables included the KTM mounted Steven Anderson who placed 1-1 in 80cc 7-11; Branden Cowie rode his Label It Honda to a 1-1 overall in the MX1 Intermediate class; and Ryan Buchanan swept the 50cc 7-8 on his KTM with a 1-1.
A pleasant surprise waited for the racers at the end of the day, with Moto Park supplying the top finishers with custom made plaques. The plaques featured a photograph of the first corner turn from each respective class (including a few crashes!), and their creativity and enthusiasm will ensure many return families.
Next weekend’s CMRC sanctioned race in Southwestern Ontario moves to Gopher Dunes for Round 1 of the Royal Distributing Ontario Provincial Championships presented by Motovan.com and an Amateur National Qualifier.
