Sackville AX Photo Report #2 Presented by Atlantic Motoplex

Photo Report from Sackville Arenacross Presented by ...

Is there ever a boring weekend at a motocross race on the East Coast? I don’t think so. I’m glad I listened to Ryan Lockhart two weeks ago and booked a flight out to Moncton for the Josh Damery Arenacross in Sackville, NB. It really didn’t take much convincing on Lockhart’s part; all he needed to say was that I’d have a chance to meet the infamous Scott Lockhart, Ryan and Brad’s father. Scott’s just like Ryan; he loves MX and loves sharing stories. You’ll hear a few in a 5 mins with ... Scott tomorrow.

Richard Strang deserves some applause for taking the gamble and putting on the show. Strang had several good people by his side and the whole weekend ran without a hitch. The stands were filled (Saturday night was especially busy), the gates were full, and the track (by Brett Beale) was perfect. Rumour has it that things went so well, Strang is already booking the Sackville Civic Centre for 2009!

The Sackville AX is proof that a quality indoor event can exist outside of British Columbia and Quebec. The promoter's decision to hold the two-day race at a smaller hockey rink, in a small town that doesn't have much going on, was a wise move. It also doesn't hurt that the Atlantic Region has a strong passion for motocross and showed up in flocks both nights.

Ryan Lockhart (9) pulled every holeshot and led every lap of the pro qualifers and main events. Even though his only real challenger was Davey Fraser, who finished second in every main event, the Newf (he's not into the Nova nickname anymore) is showing a new attitude towards racing; he's starting to realize he needs to make things happen now and is determined to fight for the MX2 championship this summer.

Kyle Chatham (99) leads the Youth class. Chatham scored a fourth place finish in the MX2 main event on Friday night, but Saturday night was tough on his body. He suffered a crash through the whoops in his Youth qualifier, and then spun out through the rhythm section in the MX2 final.

David Estabrooks injured his elbow in a heat race crash on Friday, but managed to line up for the MX1 finals on both nights. Like many Atlantic riders, Estabrooks hasn't logged much time in the saddle. Look for #218 in the MX1 class at Ste-Julie.

Little Davey Fraser isn't too little anymore. The four-seven is growing up quickly, and is now a proven top-10 contender in the nationals. Fraser kept it on two wheels, for the most part, in Sackville (I think I only saw him crash twice) and that kept him on the podium each night.

Richard Strang's sons, David (199) and Devon (19), had their YZ125's pinned chasing the four-strokes around the Sackville track. David won the Schoolboy final and finished third in MX2 Junior on Saturday, while Devon finished second in Schoolboy and fourth in MX2.

Charlie Smith is a working man now, operating heavy equipment during the week, but Charles still has some skills on the bike. Smith was the third fastest rider all weekend in the pro classes.

Daniel McLean drove four hours from his Cape Breton home to race Sackville. These Martitimers are a dedicated bunch!

Red Bull was in the house.

Zach Heydeman borrowed Darren Marshall's RM-Z250 for the weekend. Heydeman struggled with starts, but managed to come through for third in Saturday's MX1 final.

TJ Brown was unstoppable in the ATV Pro class, picking up both main event wins.

Dylan Forsythe (609) edged out Brad Lockhart (286) for the final podium spot in the MX2 final on Saturday.

Ryan Lockhart was awarded the Josh Damery Memorial Award for his help in organizing the event. It was a heartfelt moment for everyone, especially Lockhart who didn't know what to say, but what better way to celebrate a young racer's life than by holding a race in his honour.

Kyle Ledwidge went 7-5 in the MX1 main events.

Man friend in training: Brad Lockhart's buddy, Shamus, is one of the hardest working man friends I've ever seen. Shamus always made sure Brad was fed, hydrated, and in good humour. For instance, check out this pic: Shamus put his health on the line, just to make Brad laugh, by scarfing down four bacon-double-cheesburgers!

See you at the races!
