After racing Yamaha’s for John Nelson and Machine Racing for nearly a decade, Trever Hall is changing things up. For 2008, Hall will compete aboard a KTM 250 SX-F and 450 SX-F in the CMRC Ontario Provincials and four rounds of the national series. The Orange Motorsports rider had his best pro season yet last summer, winning the 250 Provincial championship, finishing ninth overall in the MX2 East series, and earning his lowest national number, 39. We caught up with Hall as he’s preparing for the season in Georgia.
RXC: Trever, where the heck have you been?
Trever Hall: Last fall I took a course to become a Heavy Equipment Operator. I'm now working for a construction company called Vision Excavating and Grading. Just recently I went down to Georgia Practice Facility to prepare for the upcoming motocross season.
I heard you made a brand switch this year. Tell us about that.
Yes, I'm riding a KTM for Orange Motorsports. Sometimes you need a little bit of change to get back on track.
I know you've been riding Yamaha's for a long time. What's the difference between the bikes?
I have been on Yamahas forever! As I said before, I think the switch is good. Riding KTM’s took a little bit of adjustment, and, after some testing, I have a setup that I am comfortable with. Really, there are subtle differences between all bikes but all you have to do is set it up to your style. These are probably the fastest stock bikes I have ever been on and the handling of the bikes is comparable to the Yamahas. I really like the bikes and I am looking forward to a good year.
I bet you like that electric start on the 450!
Oh, man, you have no idea—it's so easy! The first week I had the bike I kept on grabbing for the kick-starter still. I got it down now; all you need is your thumb!
What are your plans as far as what races you're hitting up?
I will be racing in all the Ontario Provincial races, and as for the nationals, I will be at St. Julie, Gopher Dunes, Sand Del Lee, and Walton.
How come you didn't race in Toronto?
I wasn't at a point physically that I thought I could have raced. I just didn't feel that there was any real benifit to racing the supercross.
Since you started riding, who has had the most influence on your racing career?
To be totally honest, Peter Raymer has. He got me into the sport and has helped me through a lot of things.
What's it like riding for Machine Racing and John Nelson?
Riding for John Nelson was awesome. John and I got along well; he supported me well. He can be a bit of a jokester at times but all in all, John is a good friend and manager. Thanks, John, for everything!
Describe your riding style.
My riding style is smooth, and aggressive when I need to be. Sometimes I do random one handers also [laughs].
I’ve spotted a few of those beauties! Good luck down south; we’ll see you soon.
Thanks a lot.
