Cole Thompson is already a familiar name in the world of Canadian amateur motocross … and year after year, he’s becoming an even more familiar name in the U.S. amateur ranks. We decided to give Cole a call after we saw some impressive results come in from the Gatorback round of the Florida Winter Am series. Cole is currently at his family's second home in Florida, riding and training for the upcoming Texas amateur Nationals: Lake Whitney on March 10, and Oak Hill on March 19.
Since his strong ride at the Walton TransCan this year (Thompson swept the 85cc 12 to 16 class and went 1-1-2 in the Supermini class), Thompson has been training and racing down South. He even fit in a trip to Bermuda over Christmas where he won the 85cc 12 to 15 races on both Boxing Day and New Years. Most recently, we saw his name crop up in the Florida Winter Am results at Gatorback … and once again, Cole was at the top of the list. “It was a good weekend,” says Cole. “I hadn’t raced in a while and the first moto in Supermini didn’t go too well. I got a bad start and had to work my way through, but in my other motos, I got good starts and rode consistent. I just felt really good on the bike.” Cole won both the 85cc 14 to 15 and Supermini classes.
With Lake Whitney and Oak Hill just around the corner, the family is gearing up to hit the road. In the meantime, Cole is planning to race an arenacross in Mississippi and a Loretta Lynn’s qualifier in Reddick next weekend. Then it’s time for the big show. “I want to get good starts and good finishes and hopefully I can be in the top 10 and ride really well,” says Cole of his hopes for the Texas races. He doesn’t mind the high-pressure, high-speed races. “They’re good, you get good experience and it helps out a lot to come back to Canada. You have more confidence and you race with really fast guys.”
While Cole is racing both a Suzuki and a Honda down south, he’ll focus on the four-stroke when he comes back to Canada this spring. He’ll race the TransCan qualifiers, Loretta Lynn’s qualifiers, and the TransCan itself this August. For the TransCan, he’ll be racing the new Schoolboy class, the 85cc 12 to 16 class, and Supermini.
As for his support network—the entire Thompson family— “My brother Justin has been doing an arenacross series over in Mississippi,” begins Cole. “He’s doing really well, he’s leading the points going into the last round this weekend. My brother, Jay, has been working for John Pauk. My brother, Kyle, has been training me and Kyle Stephens and Brandon Phinney and my brother, Jeffrey, has been at home working with my dad.”
