The Moto X Hunter lives!

By Billy Rainford

Well motocross fans, after a long winter in hiding, I peeked my head out of my den and crept into the daylight for another summer of the Canadian Motocross Nationals! We’ve all waited too many months for this day to come. Following the U.S. races on the computer is nice but it doesn’t compare to the sights and sounds of our fast-growing series north of the border.

As I headed east from Vancouver on HWY #1, the weather kept getting worse and worse. By the time I entered the Mission Raceway parking lot, the rain had settled in nicely with no intention of leaving any time soon. On hot summer days, the Nationals can be quite a fashion show but not today! Dressed like the Captain of the “Maid of the Mist,” I dove in ankle deep in search of racing and pretty girls. The pits looked great as usual but something was missing…no beer garden! Oh well, coffee will …what? They ran out of coffee! This could get ugly. Cooler heads prevailed and the racing was great. The fans were cheering hard for their favourite riders and in return, the riders were pushing hard for their fans.

By the end of the day, although happy, I couldn’t help doing a strange dance in hopes of some better weather for Nanaimo . Here’s what I found today for the Round Two forecast:

Saturday:
Chance of Rain. High: 55° F / 13° C Wind SW 6 mph / 10 km/h

Saturday Night:
Overcast. Low: 46° F / 8° C Wind WSW 2 mph / 3 km/h

Sunday
Chance of Rain. High: 53° F / 12° C Wind SSW 6 mph / 10 km/h

We’ve apparently waved the proverbial white weather flag. All we can do out here is show clouds and a big question mark. As the saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather out here, wait five minutes and see if it can possibly rain any harder!”

I had big plans of getting some wicked video for everyone to see but nine hours of steady rain and video equipment mix like boys and girls at a grade six dance. Anyway, here’s a clip of the action from Mission and let’s all cross our fingers just like the “meteorologists” do out here.

Mission Video 2005 and all the mud you can handle!

See you at the races!
