It was a perfect weekend at the Toyota AMA Arenacross in Rochester, NY for Monster Energy/ Babbitt’s Online’s Brock Sellards. The Ohio native took both Arenacross main event wins and moved himself up to fifth in the series points. While most of the contenders raced in Rockford, Sellards used Rochester as an opportunity to gain some points and ride more cautiously after banging himself up at the last round in Reno. Sellards rode in second for the early laps in both finals, and then took advantage of Nathan Skaggs crash in the whoops on Friday and tip over on Saturday for his first wins of the series. We spoke with Sellards following Saturday’s main.

RXC: Brock, congrats on your win this weekend!
Brock Sellards: Thank you.

You mentioned throughout the weekend that you’ve struggled staying on two wheels so far in the series, why is that?
I don’t know. I think sometimes I’m riding a little too hard. One time I was taken out by Chad Johnson while leading—and it cost me a few positions. Just a bunch of weird things have happened. I’ve gotten hit in almost every crash; I don’t crash too often on my own.

Well things certainly lined up for you in Rochester, and you actually took advantage of two mistakes by Nathan Skaggs to win both Arenacross mains. What was clicking for you this weekend?
Obviously I got off to good starts and I put my head forward, rode safer and did what I had to do to win. It was a more consistent ride for me. I’m a little tight; I’m little banged up from my last crash in Reno. I’m just fortunate enough to be here, racing, as banged up as I got. To come here and get two wins, I couldn’t be much happier.

Your main objective for racing in Rochester instead of Rockford was to gain points and move up the standings, right?
My main objective, more than anything, was that I wasn’t 100 percent and didn’t feel real comfortable going to the other event. I figured I could at least salvage points instead of lose points. It was a last second effort because my wrist wasn’t 100 percent and neither was the rest of my body.

I believe you’ve moved up to fifth in the standings now. It’s definitely a tight battle up front and there are only a few points separating everyone.
Yeah, Chad Johnson has a big lead because Josh Demuth isn’t doing them all, but that’s about it.

How do you like the new 250F-only format in arenacross?
It’s a lot different going to 250Fs. It tightens up the competition and it’s tough. It’s easier to make mistakes on 250Fs, I will tell you that.

Are you enjoying the 250?
Yeah, I like it. I’m a lighter rider and I think it works to my advantage but it also makes a lot of other people faster too.

When the arenacross series wraps up, will you race supercross?
Yeah, I usually do. If we put our team together and keep going, I will do a supercross, for sure. I need to get one point to keep my number 18. That has to be done a 450. I know if I go they will want me to ride 250.

Any plans for outdoors?
No way. I’ve done that for so many years, I’m just … I’m going to do some motocross schools during the summer and I fly planes a lot. I don’t want to race outdoors, unless I have to do one to keep my number.

Or if Mitch Payton called you [laughs].
Yeah, it would take something like Mitch calling for me to consider that.

Where are you living and training right now?
Davi Millsaps’ house. I go out to Georgia and stay at his house and train with his mother, Colleen.

When are we going to see you back in the winner’s circle at the Montreal Supercross?
Oh, shoot [laughs], I’ve had a drought there! This year, I’m not going unless I’m ready to win. This year I got way too late of a start waiting for bikes.

Toss out a thanks to everyone who’s supporting you this year.
To the whole Monster Energy/ Babbitt’s Online/ Concept Haulers/ Moose/ Maxxis Team and everyone on the team, thanks a lot.
