The Pro model athletic short from Coreshorts

The Products: Coreshorts (Lite and Pro Versions)

Online: www.coretection.com

Cost: $54.99 (Lite), $109.99 (Pro) CDN

Tested by: Rob McCullough

Duration: One year

Fit & Finish: I found the Lite short to fit a little on the large side and the Pro short to be perfect.  The shorts are anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, latex free and manufactured from a blend of Supplex and Lycra.

Purpose: Coreshorts have been designed to mimic the functional anatomy of the core area while also providing compression, thereby aiding in the prevention and/or recovery of core related injuries. That said, with shorts in hand, it’s very obvious that the Coreshorts are not your typical compression short with its 6-inch wide elastic X-pattern that extends diagonally from your hip to the opposite thigh.  Once the short is in place, the user, through a series of stretches, is able to feel the added stability offered by the Coreshort.

Track Tested: I was first introduced to the Coreshort through Dave Murray – Athletic Therapist for the Toronto Rock as a few of his players were wearing the Coreshort for Preventative and Rehabilitative purposes with excellent results.  The birth of this test actually began early one Sunday morning with Danny losing a portion of a testicle after casing a very small—and I stress a very small double—at Steve Chary’s Private Testing Compound and our attempt to get him back on the track as quickly and safely as possible so he could resume his assault on both the Ladies and CMRC National Series.  Although I personally have both the Pro and Lite short for motocross I prefer to ride with the Pro as I feel it offers the boys more protection while virtually eliminating the dreaded Monkey Butt.  Wearing the Pro short also provides a sense of added stability throughout your core. However, on the track, I felt no difference between the Lite and Pro in this regard.

Testimony: Since I injured myself at Steve Chary's track two years ago (btw, thanks for explaining everything in such detail, Rob), I haven't stepped onto my bike without my Coreshorts. I opted for the Pro Model because I really don't want to go through that painful and embarrassing injury ever again. I've been using the same set of Coreshort for the last two summers and they've held up well; the elastics remain strong, they still fit tightly, and the shorts really do make your core area feel stronger, especially when I wear them while playing hockey.

Verdict: I’ve been using my shorts with great success primarily for racing but also for hockey, mountain biking, and stair climbing, and have since had to purchase another pair of Lite shorts because after 12 months of wear, tear and laundering, the stitching has come apart on the backside of the short.  On the other hand my Pro shorts have encountered the same amount of abuse but with no adverse effects.  With a price tag of about $100.00 CDN the shorts aren’t cheap, but considering my previous experiences with lower priced compression shorts the Coreshorts are an excellent value.
