Scott Genius: is this the future for motocross boots? |
Report by Tyler Marchak and Danny Brault

The Product: Scott Genius Boot
Cost: $499 USD
Online: www.scottusa.com
Features:
Obviously the most noticable difference between the Genius and other motocross boots is the styling. While they may look more like a NASA creation for walking on the Moon, Scott has put a lot of reseach and development into the Genius, ensuring maximum comfort, fit, form, longevity, and protection. Similar to the Sidi boot, the Genius has a pivot system to allow movement but only so far in each direction to prevent injuries. Scott also uses a new material called Hytrel, which shares the characterisitics of both rubber and plastic. By constructing the Genius out of Hytrel (I think I may name my first-born after this material), it ensures resistance to cleaning chemicals, improves strength, stability, absorbs energy and thereby reduces energy transmitted through to a rider's foot or leg. And it doesn't lose shape or support over time like most traditional MX boots.

RXC's boot tester, Tyler Marchak gets suited up in the Genius. |
Tyler Marchak had the opportunity to try out the all-new Scott Genius at the official press launch at Competitive Edge Park in Hesperia, California. He walked away more than pleased with the Neil Armstrong inspired boots.
First Impression:
The new Genius MX boot from Scott was amazing. The features and functions that the boot boasted had me more than excited to try them out.
When I was being fitted with the new boots, my first impression was, Wow, these new Scott boots are nice and simple! They don’t have any frills, extra buckles or strings to mess with, an inner bootie and outer boot with only three buckles. The three buckles work great, one being for your lower foot and the other two for the upper area and shin guard. The shin guard is not folded over your leg like the typical MX boot, but is centered on the buckle straps, making for a very comfortable fit.
Track Tested:
On the track, the Scott Genius boots shine with comfort and the feeling of safety. The new Scott pivot system gives a solid feel when you are on the bike, having it limit the movement of your ankle to prevent any strain or breakage. The boots are very light and balanced, giving you better feel and balance when your legs are out in the corners. Another feature that really helps is the sure-feel shifter pad that is a soft area in the toe/shifter area that gives you better feel for the shift lever on your toe. This can really help with avoiding miss shifts.

I’d say, overall, this new Scott Genius boot is a must-have. From a protection standpoint, this boot can't be matched and, even with the added protection, the boots are still light and very comfortable. I’m going to buy a pair!
