The Manitoba Motocross Association opened the Motovan Spring Provincial Championship Series at Melita’s Sandy Oaks Raceway.  The whooped out sandy natural terrain track proved to be a difficult season opener.

Jordon Devloo took home top spot in the 50cc 7-8 class, going 3-1 in one of the most exciting classes of the day.  Moto one saw an epic three way battle between Devloo, Cole Sawatzky and Donald Fossay that included plenty of bumping and some bar banging.  Sawatzky took second on the day going 2-2 while first moto winner Fossay went down hard on the opening lap of moto 2 for a 1-DNF for ninth overall.

1998 CMRC 125 West Champion and Blair Morgan Sno-Cross racer Earl Reimer arrived privateer-style at Melita with his bike in the back of a pickup, leaving the Reimer Racing semi at home.  Reimer proved not to need the big rig, posting a consistent 3-2 day in the 250 Pro Class to take the overall.  James Simner piloted his Westside Honda backed CRF450 to a victory in moto 2, his 5-1 day was good enough for second spot on the box.  Mike Harms and his Winnipeg Sport & Leisure CRF450 grabbed the final spot on the podium.

2005 Ladies Fall Provincial Series Champion, Charity Schmidt, picked up right where she left off last season going 1-1 on the day.  Beverley Bryce-Leger has upped her game considerably this season with the jump to a 125 and it showed in the results as she posted a solid 2-2 day for second overall.  Kailyn Jobst rounds out the top three.

Jonathon Chapman (500) grabs a holeshot in the 250 Intermediate Class.  Chapman used good starts to help him to a 1-2 day and the overall, Chapman also finished 3-2 for second overall in the 125 Intermediate Class.  Colin Cyr and Michael Krut rounded out the 250 Intermediate podium.

In 50cc 4-6 class racing, Cole DeKoninck came out of the gate wide open and dominated both motos by a large margin.  Ryan Kokorudz and Austin Delaroque took second and third, respectively, in each moto.

FXR’s Matt Hamm put his Factory Stock Racing/Sun & Snow Suzuki RMZ450 on top of the box in his first eligible race in the 25+ Class.  Hamm’s 2-1 day gave him the tie breaker over the 1-2 finish of Chris Elliot.  Hamm also put in a 4-3 ride in 250 Pro good for fourth overall.

Marc Rey put in a perfect 1-1 day to take home the overall in 250 Beginner Class racing ahead of Kelly Lussier and Matthew Donald.

Chris Plett picked up a 250 this season to allow him to race both 125 and 250 Junior.  It appears to be a good decision as Plett took the overall in 250 Junior going 1-1.  His 6-8 finishes were good enough for fifth overall in the 125 class.

Having a track on the circuit in your own backyard can have its advantages, however Lane Louttit can attest to the fact resting up the week before the event isn’t one of them.  Louttit spent the last few weeks helping his mom and dad Alana and Dallas prepare the facility to welcome the racers of the MMA.  Louttit put in another strong day of work on Sunday taking both motos and the overall in the 60cc A Class.

Manitoba’s most dominant current racer Ryan Millar (50) grabs an 80cc 7-12 holeshot.  Millar was the iron man of Melita, racing three classes, 80cc 7-12, Supermini and making his debut on a 125 in the 125 Junior Class.  Racing at a track that he has struggled with in the past, Millar posted 1-1 finishes in all three classes to add to his impressive collection of hardware.

Devon Ward matched Millar’s iron man feat of riding three classes and fared almost as well.  Ward took the overall in the GP Junior Class and the Youth B class both with 1-2 finishes.  In 125 Junior Class action his 3-5 finishes were good enough for the last step on the box.

Josh Penner arrived in Melita with a pair of gregscustom.com backed Suzuki RMZ’s in the cube van with no numbers on them.  Finding his roll of electrical tape all used up Penner was forced to upgrade to some real numbers for the day.  Penner grabbed the overall in the 125 Pro class going 4-1 for the day.   The Headingley Sportshop KX250F of Adam Knutt ran a strong second going 3-2 while the Westside Honda of David Ledarney rounded out the 125 Pro podium.

Mitchell Tilbury (200) battles with Kelsey Foote (67) for a 125 Beginner Class holeshot.  Tilbury grabbed the overall going 1-4 for the day.  Evan Peluk (4-2) and Derek Anseeuw (5-3) filled the top three.

Sun & Snow’s Danny Winistok arrived in Melita to do battle in the Vet Master and 40+ classes.  Posting 2-1 finishes in both classes gave Winistok the overalls ahead of perennial class favorite Kim Houde.  Trans Canada Motorsport’s Scott Harland took third in 40+ while Renold Sawatsky grabbed the last step on the box in the Vet Master class.

Last season’s dominant 60cc racer Rio Stoesz has moved up to the 80cc 7-11 class this season.  Stoesz didn’t miss a beat going 1-1 for the overall in the surprisingly small class.  Brayden Foster showed flashes of speed but the rough Melita track had him on the ground a few times too often to challenge Stoesz, his 2-3 finishes were enough for second ahead of the 4-2 day posted by Kole Devisscher.

Brady Breemersch showed how strong his sand skills are by dominating the 125 Intermediate class by a wide margin in both motos.  Jonathon Chapman and Michael Krut rounded out the podium.

Colin Cyr posted a 4-1 day against a very strong field to take his first overall in the Youth class.

Paul Masse showed he’s enjoying his switch to the Big Red Diesel after spending last season on a 250 two-stroke.  Masse took both 40+ B class motos to grab the overall ahead of the 2-3 finishes of Ron Lehmann, and the 4-3 day posted by Cam Goerzen.

Myles Lawrence squeaked out the overall in Vet Junior racing with his 1-3 day giving him a one point victory over the 2-2 finishes posted by Chris Jebb.

With another raceday in the books all that’s left until next week is to pull over and do a little bench racing.
