This week, the postman delivered our May issue of Racer X Canada and Racer X Illustrated and we were left breathless. Even though we were satisfied with our last issue—our first stand-alone version with Darcy Lange on the cover—it still didn’t meet our expectations. So our small crew sat down, took a vocal beating from our General Manager, Brett Dailey, and we just gave 'er to ensure that the May issue was not just a stand-alone, but a standout. It worked.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve had friends ask me: “So, what do you do in the winter for stories, because there isn’t much racing going on in Canada?” Well, this winter we have been blessed with a moderate sized contingent of Canadians racing the prolific Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series, and that has helped to fill our racing needs. Senior Editor, Allison Kennedy, took the reigns on this feature and flew down to Anaheim 2 to catch up with our Canadian SX stars. Through her lens, along with other top photographers, Kennedy came up with California Dreaming, a feature showcasing the breakthrough moments of Marco Dubé, Darcy Lange, Doug DeHaan, Colton Facciotti and the privateer life of Ryan Lockhart.

Brett Dailey finally put down the bottle and churned out a great story with eighties phenom, Kevin Moore. Growing up in Sudbury, Ontario, Moore destroyed the competition in the amateur ranks, before moving to the pro class at just 17 years of age and challenging legends, Ross Pederson, Doug Hoover, Al Dyck, Jeff Surwall and Mike Harnden, in the now defunct CMA Nationals. It’s a great read, and anyone who loves old school (don’t we all?) will appreciate this story. A big hand to our Art Director, Dawn McClintock, for her awesome layouts in both the SX feature and the Moore story.

Similar to our prior issue, we included a piece on a rising amateur racer. Last year, at the Walton TransCan, Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Davey Fraser won the inaugural Racer X Canada Total Devotion award, which was a free week at the Millsaps Training Facility. I visited the get-fast camp in Cairo, Georgia to see just what the young student, Fraser, was learning. Turns out Fraser enjoyed his time so much, and the advice he was given, that he signed up for another week. We’re excited to announce that we will be awarding another one week stay at MTF again this August at Walton … who will it be?

Here it is: the coveted first page of the May issue of Racer X Canada. It was a late decision, but we had to wait until the results of the opening round of the East Lites SX series to see how the Blackfoot Honda Fox Racing team fared, along with Brady Sheren, DeHaan and Lockhart. And, since Dusty Klatt was the top finisher with a 13th in the Lites main event, he was an easy choice. He then followed that up with a 12th place in Daytona and an eighth in Orlando. Congratulations, Dusty!
Not that you really need an incentive to go cheer on our boys at the Detroit SX this weekend at Ford Field, but if you do attend, come to the Racer X booth in the pits.
