M2R Helmets Detroit Supercross Preview

By Brett Dailey

The best supercross series in recent history and a new stadium -- this should be a good weekend! Even better, this one is a hop-skip-and-a-jump from the lavish basement office that houses the Racer X Canada crew from morning ‘till night. Did I mention that the bottom half of the walls are no longer covered with drywall due to a drainage problem in the fall? It's no wonder that I moved to the east coast! Sorry, our new issue just arrived so I’m a little giddy today. On with the preview!

Detroit’s Ford Field will host Round 12 of the AMA Supercross series and our Canadians are riding better than ever. Dusty Klatt stole the show in Orlando with a couple of qualifier wins and a come-from-behind charge to eighth overall in the Lites main event. However, Doug DeHaan, Ryan Lockhart, Marco Dube and Brady Sheren all posted respectable times and finishes. Check out the schedule below for a Canadian recap.

Look for a brand new Sunline/ SixSixOne-sponsored photo report which starts early next week. We will be running this new feature all year and we would like to thank Rick Sheren for supporting the web.

Doug DeHaan spent some time at home in London this week prior to the race in Detroit (he even stopped by the office). He’s so close to making it into the main each weekend but always seems to get mixed up in a scuffle of some sort on the track. Some big names like Erick Vallejo, Jason Thomas, Brock Sellards, Clark Stiles, Jiri Dostal, Cole Siebler and Jeff Dement are all on the bubble each weekend so everyone is riding aggressively to make it in. He holeshot his LCQ last weekend but later crashed out of a qualifying position. Hopefully a little time at home is just what Doug needs and we will see him in the main this weekend.

In other news, look for the unruly one, Todd Kuli, spinning the wrenches for Lockhart this weekend. I believe the last time Kuli made a cameo appearance at a big AMA race, he wrenched for JSR at Mt. Morris and JSR holeshot! If Lockhart can holeshot his Semi, he has a good shot at making the SX main. This is the last supercross for Lockhart as he will begin the long journey back to California after Detroit. (And then turn around and drive back to Nova Scotia!)

Speaking of Nova Scotia, Mitch Cooke will reportedly return home next week and continue his training and testing for the Canadian nationals. Blackfoot has not confirmed it but Jimmy Nelson looks to be their MX2 West rider for the nationals. Nelson was under their tent in Orlando and our super spy reporter in Georgia says that Nelson was in the team photo shoot this week in Georgia. JSR was there as well and he is said to be ahead of schedule with his knee rehabilitation.

Morgan Racing Yamaha is tossing some very interesting names around for their 2006 team. This should be a good season with plenty of surprises!

It looks like Brady Sheren will soon switch to red and race Hondas for Holeshot Racing. Stay tuned for an interview this weekend.

Be sure to tune into www.supercross.cc.com on Saturday for live web coverage of the event. Here are more links: @theWire LIVE, live audio, results.

Detroit will be televised on Speed TV on Sunday March 26th at 6PM EST. Also, don’t miss The Reality of Speed on Tuesdays. I’m hooked on that show this season!

If you plan to attend the Detroit Supercross this weekend, be sure to swing by the Racer X booth in the pits. If you subscribe or renew your subscription to Racer X, you will get a James Stewart cover poster, limited edition Racer X t-shirt and the newest copy of Racer X Illustrated and the brand new issue of Racer X Canada! Look for Fubar in the concourse of Ford Field and get yourself a limited edition Jeff Stanton trading card.

That’s it for now. To get you pumped up for Saturday night, here are some stellar shots from Orlando courtesy of Racer X Canada’s Jean-Francois Trottier.

James Stewart earned a convincing win last weekend in Orlando.
Can he do it again this weekend?

RC hopes to be looking back at Stewart this weekend.

Dusty Klatt has the whoops figured out (and the rest of the SX track). Could he match Darcy's Lange's top five finish from the western Lites division?

Probably the most exciting guy to watch in the Lites class right now, Josh Grant. (Other than the Canadians, of course.)

Doug DeHaan battles with Jiri Dostal (70), Jacob Marsack (337) and Ted Campbell (175) in a day qualifier. Can he make it this weekend?

Ryan Lockhart has been riding with a lot of confidence and has been grabbing great starts. This is his last supercross for the season so it sure would be great to go out with a bang.

Brady Sheren will be switching to Hondas soon. He has been on a Kawasaki since he raced 60s and, in 2002, he bacame the first Canadian to be sponsored by Team Green USA.

Marco Dube debuted some new FXR gear in Orlando. Don't expect him to line up in Detroit. He's testing with the KTM Canada team in Florida. Check out the Canadian flag on his brake reservoir!
