Brad Adams

Instead of kicking his heels up and finding a comfortable spot on the beach for spring break, Brad Adams chose to spend his break from university chasing fellow Ontario racers Cory Gerrits, Kyle Ferguson, Justin Thompson, Joel Saarits and Trever Hall around the County Line MX track in Fountain, Florida. A contender in the intermediate class the last few years, Adams qualified for three MX2 East Nationals last summer (Joliette, Moncton and Walton) and proved he has what it takes speedwise to run in the pro class. Adams knows speed isn't the only ingredient needed for success in the pro class, especially at the nationals, so he's been hitting the gym between classes trying to better his fitness level. We caught up with Adams in between motos at County Line to see how his winter preparations have been going.

RXC: Brad, how did things go for you last year?
Brad Adams: Last year was a good learning experience. I qualified for three of the MX2 East nationals, so … went out there and learned what I need to improve and how to do it.

What did you learn racing the nationals last year?
I think I can put the speed together for a couple of laps, but now I need to put that speed together for 30 minutes and just be consistent.

So what are you doing to improve on that?
A lot of training. I’ve been going to the gym every morning, training, doing the weights and cardio and running and being on the bike as much as I can.

Which national went the best for you last year?
Probably out at Riverglade in Moncton. My finishes were good, I had a couple of little crashes, but nothing major.

I heard there was quite an adventure on the way home from that race ….
Oh [laughs] yeah. Cory Gerrits, Derek Arnold, two other guys and I loaded up in my van and trailer. We had three bikes and all of our stuff. Derek was driving my van when we started hearing something going tick, tick, tick … and ended up blowing a rod in the motor. So we pulled over and got towed into town. It was a holiday, Sunday night, and everything was closed on Monday. We got a little motel and stayed over. We ended up renting a U-Haul and trailer and put the van on the trailer; we left my trailer in Moncton and got the Phinney’s to tow my trailer back. Cory and the two other guys were in the back of the U-Haul with all their stuff, all in the dark, just camped back there and Derek and I drove back through the night. We ended up making it home on Wednesday. So, yeah, that was an adventure. [Laughs]

Do you find being down here riding with a bunch of faster riders is helping?
It’s been great. These different guys down here, like Trever Hall, [Joel] Saarits, Justin Thompson, all of those guys are something to shoot for. It helps keep me motivated.

Have you come down to Florida to train previously?
This is my second year. I’m going to school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, so I get to ride a little bit here and there when I’m not in school or working.

Which school do you go to?
Southern Adventist University.

Which year are you in and what are taking?
I’m in my third year, so I have one more year left. I’m taking marketing and finance.

What’s your plan when you graduate?
After I’m done school, I’m going to get a job working with Gary Bittner. So I’ll be doing that and hopefully racing as much as I can.

I know your family has always been very supportive of you and your sister Brooke’s racing. How has that helped your racing career?
Family is the base of everything. Without a family, you don’t have that support you need. You don’t have the emotional support, you don’t have the physical support. I couldn’t do it without my family; they’ve been great.

Heading into your first season as a pro, do you have any expectations for the provincials or nationals?
I’m going in to do my best, and hopefully that will be top-20 consistently at the nationals and I would like to get a national number.

Good luck this year, Brad.
Thanks a lot.
