Not only are Canadian pros making waves throughout the world of motocross, but our amateur riders are also holding their own at international events. The most recent example came at the Mini Olympics in Gainesville, Florida last week, when 11-year-old Cole Thompson won the 65cc 10-11 Stock class and earned the bronze medal as Third Olympian in his division.
Thompson, who just came off an incredible season in Canada, where he won the 65cc and 80cc 7-11 Ontario Provincial Championships and Walton TransCan titles, has just penned a deal with Cernic’s Suzuki from the U.S., through the help of MCR’s Matt Crown.
“Matt has been working with Travis [Pastrana], so he put in a good word with Cernic’s and he had been pushing for Cole for a while, so it went through. Especially after doing well at the amateur nationals,” said Cole’s older brother, Kyle.

Matt Crown says that Thompson looks like a big guy on a little bike, based on his ability to throw a bike around. |
The Mini O’s wasn’t Thompson’s first taste of racing success south of the border. Last March, he finished second in the 65cc 10-11 Mod class behind Brandon Mays of New York. Then in the summer, arguably his biggest ride yet, Thompson won the first 65cc 10-11 Stock moto at Loretta Lynn’s, where he lead every lap. Unfortunately, he was later disqualified following a protest of the top four riders, because his forks had ’04 components and did not meet with the 2005 bike manual’s specifications.
A fairly long list of Canadian amateurs made the journey down to Florida for the national. Official results have been difficult to find for the event, but rumour has it Richard Grey rode within in the top 10 in the 65cc 10-11 classes on his new KTMs, Rob Pelletier finished 20th in his 125 B Stock supercross race and was outside the top 20 in his motocross main. Billy Mullen, Matt McGuiness, Cory Brooks, the Snelgrove brothers, Dan Gysbers, Davey Fraser and others made the trip as well, but official results have not been posted.
