Blackfoot Racing's Dean Thompson has been fielding a lot of calls
lately about whether Jean Sebastien Roy is racing the World Supercross
rounds in Toronto and Vancouver and also how Dusty Klatt and Mitch
Cooke are doing at the Georgia Practice Facility. He decided to give us
a call and update everyone with the official word on how the team
is doing while they prepare for the Toronto Supercross on December 3rd.

With no internet access at GPF, you won't see too many photos of Mitch Cooke and Dusty Klatt putting in laps on the Supercross track. Here's a nice spy photo of Mitch courtesy of Dean. |
Racer X Canada: So, JSR will not be racing the World Supercross rounds?
Dean Thompson: JSR had surgery after the Montreal Supercross and had his ACL replaced. He had full replacement surgery with a bone graft as well. It’s [his knee injury] something that’s been nagging him for a number of years so he finally decided that, in order to continue on at the level that he’s racing at, it was important to have the surgery done. So, he had to bite the bullet and have it done and the spin off from the surgery is that his winter racing season is pretty much put on hold. He’s at home recuperating and he’s doing his cardio and everything but unfortunately he is going to be a spectator for the winter series including the World Supercross rounds and many of the European races that he typically enters. So, this winter he will spend his time recuperating and preparing himself to defend his fifth Canadian MX1 title.
Any plans for JSR to come to Toronto and Vancouver and work with Dusty and Mitch?
We’re up in the air right now. Obviously JSR is a veteran in the
sport and has a lot to add in regards to sharing his experience and
help with training. The boys are currently down in Georgia getting
ready for the World Supercross rounds and also for the Eastern rounds
of the SX Lite series in the U.S. We will probably get JSR to go down
to Georgia and also to a few of the U.S. supercross rounds to act as a
mentor and also to help out with the program. He won’t be there for
every race but we will definitely make use of what he has to offer the
team since he has raced the U.S. supercross series for many years in
the past.
How is everything going in Georgia?
Everything is going really well. Both Dusty and Mitch have a
personal trainer down there and they have been doing a two-hour workout
every single morning with the trainer and then their regular motos as
well on the supercross track. The facility is amazing, they have a
supercross track that was designed by Mark Barnett at the beginning of
the year. A few riders have popped in and out of there, Brock Sellards
was there, Ezra Lusk and a few other top guys stopped by for a few
days. We decided to pull out of the Mini O’s, and the reason was
strictly due to time constraints. We figured that five days of going
and doing the Mini O’s and getting onto the track only about six times
each for 10 to 15 minute motos would not offer as much momentum as
their current program. We figured that their time would be better spent
at GPF getting themselves better prepared for the World Supercross
rounds so at the last minute we decided to pull out of the Mini
Olympics and continue with their current training.
The team is very excited to be able to do the World Supercross rounds this year, it’s something that we would have liked to do last year but due to time constraints and budget constraints we weren’t able to do it. But this year we had enough leeway and we were able to plan accordingly so we are looking forward to racing at home with the Canadian fans and our Canadian riders.
Are Dusty and Mitch optimistic?
Well, their [lap] times are coming down and they are feeling a lot
more comfortable and their fitness levels are coming up so we are
hoping to do well at World Supercross but we will continue to go down
there after Vancouver and go hard for their practicing for the eastern
opener in St. Louis in February.
Well, good luck with the last few days of preparation and we will see you guys in action very soon.
Thanks. See you in Toronto!
