Saturday: Lockhart and Lange Split Wins

Report and photos by James Lissimore

After Friday night's main event sweep by Yamaha's Kyle Beaton, Saturday's program would be filled with anticipation as the top AX contenders would be looking to keep a repeat from happening. In fact, by the end of the night, Beaton would be shut out of the podium, showing how unpredictable arenacross racing can be.

AX2 Main: Ryan Lockhart gets the jump on Darcy Lange off the start. This would lead to an amazing race-long battle involving Lockhart, Lange, Kyle Beaton (who would later bobble and fall back) and Colton Facciotti.

Hey, you're in my airspace: Early in the race (with Ryan Lockhart holding a slight lead), Kyle Beaton and Darcy Lange were battling for position, neither one giving so much as an inch to their opponent. Colton Facciotti would end up overtaking both riders later in the race to score second.

How's this for a lead battle? Ryan Lockhart and Darcy Lange take the inside while Colton Facciotti goes for the outside line during a three way battle for the lead that would go on for the last half of the race. In the end, Lockhart would hold both Richmond Kawasaki riders off to score the win and Facciotti would get by Lange on the last lap to score second.

Kawasaki rider Brady Sheren improved on his fifth place finish Friday to score a fourth in the AX Open final on Saturday night. With one round remaining, Brady will be gunning for the podium next week as he prepares for his assault on the AMA West Coast 125 Supercross, er....Lites series.

Fast Vancouver Island rider, Milo Christie, made the ferry ride over to try his hand at the National series and came away with a pair of sixth place finishes for the weekend. Milo should be fired up to improve on that next weekend as he races in front of his hometown fans.

Broc Hoyer packs down his gate before the start of the AX2 main event. The Williams Lake native proved that last weekend wasn't a fluke by placing top five in three out of the four main events. The Honda rider is leading the charge for the next wave of fast, up-and-coming BC indoor riders.

Colton Facciotti leads Darcy Lange during the early stages of the AX Open main. The two would battle for the entire race but the two-time AMA champ would eventually get by his younger teammate to take the win. Ryan Lockhart would place third, securing his fourth straight podium of the weekend.

Arenacross action at it's finest! Darcy Lange and Colton Facciotti were this close for the majority of both main events. It's a good thing they're both on Kawasaki's because they were swapping paint all race long. If you're a fan of great racing (who isn't?) the tight confines and technical track obstacles of arenacross racing can't be beat.

Darcy Lange celebrates his AX Open win with a heel clicker (is that trick written into Richmond Kawasaki's contract or something?) A rare off weekend for the champ left Darcy with only one main event win. The final race of the season next weekend will be his "coming home" race so you can guarantee that Lange will be looking to make a statement in front of his friends and family. Don't be surprised to see a clean sweep from the arenacross master.

The AX Open Podium: This has been a familiar sight all season, but with Ryan Lockhart heading to the States to try his hand at the BooKoo series there will certainly be a change next weekend. Can Darcy Lange dominate in front of his hometown crowd? Can Colton Facciotti win a few more mains like he has done so often this season? Can Kyle Beaton control his light switch throttle hand and sweep another night? Or will someone new rise out of the shadows to overtake the established stars? We'll find out next weekend at the Arbutus Meadows Equestrian Center in Nanaimo. Be there!
