OCTOBER 20, 2005
The November issue of Racer X Illustrated was sent out to subscribers two weeks ago, and it has now hit the newsstands. This issue features the 80-page Racer X Canada insert and, based on the early response from readers, we are confident that this is our best issue yet!
Our designers did an incredible job, and readers will find that the magazine has an improved Canadian feel to it. Complimenting the design is the eye-catching photography work by Jason Griffiths, Allison Kennedy and our contributing shooters, which adds emotion to all of our features.
It is never an easy process selecting a cover shot, when we have so many deserving Canadian riders, but after a long discussion we went with Blackfoot Honda’s Mitch Cooke. The East Coast rider didn’t have much luck in the west, but he redeemed himself in the MX2 East class with his first Canadian national win in Moncton and third overall in a series that wasn't decided until the final moto.
Our features in this month’s Racer X Canada are definitely unique. With race results and happenings available instantly on the web following events, we are trying to bring more in-depth features from stories away from the race track, beginning with Allison Kennedy and Brett Dailey’s story on the increasing number of U.S. riders hired to come north and win championships, raising the question: Where does this leave Canadian riders? Team managers, riders and the CMRC give their take on the situation and whether an all-Canadian 125 class is viable.
As everyone knows, there is big difference between the sport in the U.S. and in Canada, so we decided to tackle a compelling story which explores the lifestyle of a highly publicized U.S. rider and a top Canadian pro. As we had hoped, their daily schedules are at opposite ends of the spectrum, yet both share many of the same qualities such as family support.
Gopher Dunes was a welcome addition to this year’s national schedule, and JTG put together a great piece on what is now being called, ‘The roughest track in Canada.’ As one early reader commented, ‘I’m not even a fan of the Gopher track, but after reading the story, it makes me want to go and see what it’s all about.’
You will also find a spread on Alberta's Dean Wilson that Davey Coombs wrote while watching one of Canada's brightest stars at both Loretta Lynn's and the Walton TransCan. It was perfect timing as Dean and family have now made a move to California to take their motocross aspirations to the next level. Good luck Dean!
